What's inside

Inside the Free Guide

You Don't Have to Choose is a 20-page guide written specifically for American retirees planning their first trip to Ireland, Scotland, or the UK. Here's what's inside:

  • The honest truth about all four travel styles — large coach tour, small-group tour, private driver-guide, and self-drive — including what each one genuinely costs you that the brochures never mention
  • Why the question most people are asking is the wrong one — and the reframe that makes the entire planning process click into place
  • A real trip, built from scratch — how one couple got private driver-guides, castle stays in the Scottish countryside and Irish midlands, and independent days in Edinburgh and Dublin — all under a $20,000 budget
  • The Loch Ness moment — what happens when a guide who actually knows you tells you the honest truth about an iconic site — and proposes something better
  • Five questions to help you find your own answer — a self-assessment that tells you exactly what kind of trip you actually want before you talk to anyone about booking
  • Four questions to ask any travel specialist — before you hand over a deposit, make sure you're talking to someone who can actually do what this guide describes

By the time you finish reading, the wall will be gone.

Is this for you?

This Guide Is for You If…

This is for you if:

  • You've been thinking about Ireland, Scotland, or the UK for years — and haven't pulled the trigger
  • You've started researching and hit the wall — too many options, too many opinions, no clear path forward
  • You and your spouse want different things from the trip — one wants freedom, one wants everything handled
  • You're worried about driving on the left — but don't want to be locked into a tour bus schedule either
  • You want the trip to feel like yours — not like the forty-nine other people on the same departure

This is not for you if:

  • You're looking for the cheapest possible way to see Ireland
  • You're happy with whatever a brochure offers
  • You've already booked and just need confirmation you made the right call

If that last bullet describes you — congratulations.
Come back when you're ready to plan the next one.

A real client. A real trip.

What a Custom Hybrid Trip Actually Looks Like

A couple came to me having researched their Scotland and Ireland trip for months. They knew what they wanted — guided touring in the Highlands and countryside, independent days in Edinburgh and Dublin — but couldn't make the pieces connect on their own.

Here's what we built: private driver-guides for both countries, castle stays in the Scottish Borders and the Irish midlands, independent city days woven in seamlessly, and a route through Argyll that their own research never would have found. All under their $20,000 budget.

2 Countries woven into one seamless journey
14 Days — private guides, castle stays, city hotels
$20K Budget — came in under it with private guides

My wife and I had a tremendous trip to Scotland and Ireland that was superbly engineered for our needs. Brian listened to our interests and developed several itineraries and special arrangements for us to consider. The drivers were top notch, the itineraries perfect, the sights were spectacular, and the accommodations exceeded our expectations. We've traveled all over the world, but this was our first time to these countries and we couldn't have been more happy.

I'm Brian Whitacre, a travel specialist with Whitacre Travel and the author of this guide.

For more than seven years I've focused on one thing: building custom trips to Ireland, Scotland, and the UK for American travelers who want more than a seat on a tour bus. I work with in-country partners — driver-guides, properties, and destination specialists — who know these countries at a level no booking engine can replicate.

Every land itinerary I build is designed from scratch around the traveler. Not pulled off a shelf. Not adapted from last year's group departure. Built for you specifically — your pace, your interests, the experience you've been imagining.

This guide is the clearest way I know to explain what that actually looks like — and why the choice most people think they have to make isn't really a choice at all.
